Introduction: Acute pancreatitis are frequently treated with opioids, but long-term risk for opioid use disorders (OUD) is not well known. The aim of present study is to examine one year risk of OUD after acute pancreatitis hospitalization using Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD).
Methods: We used the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) NRD to identify adult patients admitted with acute pancreatitis in 2016 using ICD-10-CM codes. We included only patients discharged in January to allow the 11 months of follow up to identify readmissions associated with OUD using ICD-10-CM codes. We used the survey based multivariate logistic regression model to identify the risk factors associated with OUD readmission.
Results: We identified a total of 22,488 index hospitalizations associated with acute pancreatitis in January 2016 in the United States and 1,610 (7.2%) of them were readmitted with OUD during 11 month follow up. Increasing age, having private medical insurance, and index admission at non-metropolitan hospital was associated with lower risk of OUD readmission while having ≥2 Charlson Comorbidity Index was associated with higher risk of OUD readmission (Table 2).
Discussion: Having higher number of co-morbidities is associated with long-term risk of OUD after acute pancreatitis.
