Introduction: Endoscopic placement of biliary stents is a common approach for managing benign biliary strictures (BBS). Nonetheless, traditional metal and plastic stents have notable drawbacks. Ensuring long-term efficacy, mitigating fibrosis, and ensuring compatibility with the body are pivotal considerations for effectively utilizing stents in BBS treatment. Our study sought to evaluate both the degradation process and the therapeutic impact of drug-eluting biodegradable biliary stents (DBBS).
Methods: We created a biodegradable stent (DBS) infused with dexamethasone, featuring a durable sheath/core design. This stent exhibited excellent mechanical strength and consistently released dexamethasone, sustaining its efficacy within a BBS duct for a period of 12 weeks.
Results: The deployment of our DBS not only enlarged areas affected by BBS but also facilitated the healing of secondary ulcers by reducing fibrosis. Sixteen weeks post-insertion, the BBS areas showed complete improvement, and the DBS had degraded and completely dissolved without the need for additional intervention for stent removal.
Discussion: Our study concluded that DBBS retained their initial shape and radial strength over an extended period while exhibiting significant therapeutic benefits.
