Introduction: Electronic patient portals, such as Epic MyChart, are powerful tools for clinicians to connect and engage with their patients. Various studies within adult and pediatric primary care practices have identified barriers to activation. However, there is insufficient research exploring disparities in MyChart enrollment within the gastroenterology subspecialty. Objective: Primary Aim: To compare MyChart activation within pediatric and adult gastroenterology outpatient clinics. Secondary Aim: To compare patient characteristics within pediatric and adult gastroenterology outpatient clinics.
Methods: We reviewed the electronic patient portal enrollment status of all gastroenterology patients seen at our institution in 2022. We investigated variables including age, gender, language, insurance, new status, source of referral, & number of visits in 2022. Statistical comparisons, including chi-square and odds ratios, were performed utilizing SPSS.
Results: In 2022, our institution had 5,097 total gastroenterology patients across all ambulatory care sites. Pediatric GI had 883 patients with a 21.3% overall activation rate. Adult GI had 4,214 patients with an overall activation rate of 53.1%. Pediatric gastroenterology patients have odds ratio an of 0.24 (95% CI: 0.20 – 0.28) for activation compared to adult gastroenterology patients. Within pediatric gastroenterology clinics, males, non-English speakers, new patients, and external referrals are less likely to activate MyChart. Within adult gastroenterology clinics, Medicaid/Medicare insurance holders, new patients, external referrals, and patients with 1 visit per year are less likely to activate MyChart.
Discussion: Our results demonstrate significant differences in patient portal enrollment between pediatric and adult gastroenterology practices. Furthermore, our study identified that each clinic type has different contributing patient factors that affect activation. As an institution, we hope to harness this information to develop targeted strategies to increase patient portal enrollment.
