Introduction: This study delves into the various recruitment methods, strategic marketing, and financial approaches employed to identify candidates nationwide for the inaugural Gastroenterology (GI) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship.
Methods: The process of finding the ideal candidate for our APP Fellowship in GI involved several strategies. These included targeted outreach to professional networks, advertising on relevant online platforms and publications, engagement with academic institutions, and collaboration with healthcare organizations. A strategic marketing approach emphasized the program's financial stability, highlighting competitive benefits, student loan forgiveness, an attractive starting salary, and potential for career advancement. In addition to internal announcements within our School of Medicine, we utilized free online advertisements on Indeed and ZipRecruiter. Ultimately, all applicants on external hiring platforms received emails from the Program Director, inviting them to apply officially through our university application portal. This application process included letters of recommendation, an unofficial transcript, an updated curriculum vitae, and a personal statement. The Program Director and other volunteer staff carefully reviewed all applications and arranged interviews, resulting in cost savings as there was no need for additional support from the Human Resources team.
Results: Thirteen candidates from across the country submitted applications through Indeed.com, ZipRecruiter, and/or the official university application portal. Seven of these candidates proceeded to interviews, demonstrating the program's ability to attract external interest. Notably, only 1 applicant came from within the hiring healthcare system. Among the 7 candidates interviewed, 3 were from in-state, while four were from out-of-state locations, showcasing the program's nationwide recognition efforts. Our multifaceted recruitment approach proved effective in attracting a diverse pool of applicants.
Discussion: The utilization of diverse recruitment methods and strategic marketing approaches, with cost considerations in mind, successfully identified optimal candidates for the inaugural Gastroenterology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship. The results highlight robust external interest in the fellowship, with a majority of applicants originating from out-of-state locations, validating the program's nationwide recognition efforts.
